Germany: Partnership Law Proposed

The Volkskammer, the parliament of the late German Democratic Republic, considered a bill for the introduction of legal marriages for lesbians and gays shortly before its demise.

“Even if the bill is only operative for two weeks, it could set an example which one day must come about in the united Germany,” said Gregor Gysi, one of the Democratic Socialism Party MPs who sponsored the move. Ingrid Buttner, another MP said “We are guided by ... the humanism that arises from political and moral demands of society, that requires acceptance of, and equal opportunities for, all.”

Unfortunately there is little chance that such legislation for lesbian and gay marriages will be passed now that unification has taken place, since the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in the West is so strong.
