Sweden: New Partnership Law

Sweden has followed Denmark and Norway in introducing a partnership law for lesbians and gay men.

Despite opposition from Christian Democrats, the Swedish Parliament voted in favour of the new legislation by 171 to 141 – a bigger majority than expected.

As in the other two countries, the Partnership Law will give lesbians and gays the same legal privileges as heterosexual married couples, including the right of inheritance, with the exception of adoption of children and church ritual.
